Workers’ Memorial Day

On April 28, we observe Workers’ Memorial Day to remember those who have suffered and died on the job and to renew the fight for safe jobs. This year we come together to defend Workers protections from recent attacks and to commit to fighting until all workers have safe jobs and the freedom to seek a safe future.

The Occupational Safety and Health Act promises workers the right to a safe job. The UAW-GM Health and Safety Department fights every day to make that promise a reality— putting in place protections that have made jobs safer, saved lives and helped to prevent workplace injuries and illnesses.

But our work is not done. We remain committed not only to our mission of eliminating fatalities, but sharing a new focus of “NOT HURTING PEOPLE”. As a member of our UAW-GM family, we all have the right to a safe workplace and our Joint Health and Safety teams are constantly on the job promoting values that return people home safely. Every Person, Every Site, Every Day.

UAW member made vehicles voted Consumer Reports best in class!

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruz and 2017 Chevrolet Impala earned the honor of being named top cars in their class for 2017 by Consumer Reports. Graded on reliability, owner satisfaction, safety and a 50-point performance evaluation, the Cruze and Impala were named the top compact car and large sedan, respectively.

“If you look at the competitors, you look at Corollas or any other compact cars, there’s a lot that they could learn from the Cruze in terms of ride, quietness and just a substantial-feeling vehicle, along with having the latest infotainment, which again you can navigate. It’s not overwhelming. It’s well-laid out.”Jake Fisher, Consumer Reports director of automotive testing, said.

In regards to the Impala Fisher said  “I know when we first said the Chevy Impala was a top pick, there was a lot of confused faces,” Fisher said. “This is not the rental car version. This is the new version that they have which drives like a luxury vehicle, continues to be reliable and it’s just good owner satisfaction. It drives terrific.”

Congratulations to our UAW members at Local 1112 and 1714, Lordstown (Cruze), Local 22 Detroit Hamtramck (Impala) and all our members at our Stamping, Propulsion and GMCH facilities that supply products for these vehicles. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication that goes into building such high quality products!

Suggestion Program Spotlight

The UAW-GM Suggestions Program is a program to recognize employees in North American facilities for their ideas. Ideas are evaluated and many are implemented because they remove waste, solve a problem or give an improvement in a process.

A suggestion can be submitted on a paper form or through the electronic system, GoStars. You must have an active GMID to access GoStars, the electronic system. A suggestion can be submitted by an individual or a team. So maybe during your next team meeting, get together and brain storm as to what suggestions your team can submit. That suggestion could solve a problem that took the team working collectively to resolve.

There is always room for improvement and the Suggestion Program is no different. We are currently updating the program, so look for new improvements to come!!

Congratulations UAW Local 1005 Members!

parma

Congratulations Parma Metal Center at achieving BIQ Level IV! They are the first standalone stamping plant in North America to achieve this certification. The calibrators were very impressed with the team engagement at Parma. They showed the assessors that they, as a team, know their business and want to continue providing World Class Quality to the assembly plants.

“Congratulations on BIQ IV,” said UAW Local 1005 Shop Chairman Al Tiller. “This is a huge step in the right direction and this is a direct reflection of our commitment to be the best of the best.
